How to become a volunteer

Please note, all volunteers must be a minimum of 14 years old in order to volunteer with the City of Richmond Hill.

Build an online profile

Build your online profile in our volunteer database. Follow the instructions and complete all required fields. Don't forget to save your profile! Once your online profile is successfully set up, you will receive two emails from us - one with your username and login information and one welcoming you to our volunteer program.

Attend a volunteer orientation

To learn more about our volunteer program and get yourself ready to volunteer, you must sign up to attend a volunteer orientation.

Complete Accessible Customer Service Training

You need to complete the AODA Accessible Customer Service Training online before you can start volunteering. You can access the AODA Accessible Customer Service Training online once you have successfully created your online profile.

You will need to get a passing score of 80% or above in order to successfully complete the training. Upon completion, a notification will be sent to Volunteer Development and a badge will be shown on your online profile.

Send us your required forms

Volunteers aged 14-17:

Please download and complete the Parent/Guardian Waiver Form. Your parent/guardian and witness need to complete this form.

Volunteers aged 18 or above:

You are required to get a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) from a local police office department.

  • If your residential address is in York Region, email us with your interest to volunteer and your full name (official name). We will send you the Volunteer Letter and details of VSC application. Find more details on: Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) - York Regional Police (yrp.ca)
  • If your residential address is out of York Region, contact us for the application details.

Send your completed waiver form or Vulnerable Sector Check via either one of the following ways:

  • Email to: volunteers@richmondhill.ca

Please note that if you would like to volunteer for Aquatic programs, in addition to the above-mentioned forms, you will also need to email us a copy of your aquatic certification (Bronze Medallion or higher).

You are accepted and ready to volunteer!

Once you complete all required training and submit all required documents, your online profile will be “accepted” within a few business days. You then can start to sign-up for volunteer opportunities by logging into your volunteer profile.
