More in this Section...

Celebrate with us all year long!

Richmond Hill was officially incorporated as a “Village” in 1873. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, we’re hosting activities for the community throughout 2023. From tree plantings and community activities, to public art and time capsules, we’ll have something for everyone in Richmond Hill to enjoy.

Let’s reunite, reconnect and celebrate all that makes us proud to call Richmond Hill home.

To help commemorate our 150th anniversary, the City commissioned award-winning local filmmaker Sean Cisterna to create a short film on the people of Richmond Hill. Throughout the year we reflected on the past, present, and future of our community and all that makes us proud to call Richmond Hill home. This project has been made possible [in part] by the Government of Canada.

RH150 Community Art Projects

To help commemorate Richmond Hill’s 150th anniversary, the City commissioned three Community Mural Projects. For each project, artists were asked to capture Richmond Hill’s past, present and future to provide a sense of social connectivity and community pride.

The Projects:

Community Mural Project at Richmond Green

Mural at Richmond Green Sports Centre Building

The City commissioned York Region-based artist Chris Perez to paint an outdoor, large community mural. Chris is a Canadian-Filipino artist practicing in abstract painting and mural art. His influences are derived from street art, graffiti, murals, abstract art, and expressionist painting. He primarily uses latex, acrylics, and spray paint as his main mediums and has more than a decade's experience painting murals from residential to commercial and interior and exterior surfaces. He is currently developing a series of artwork that revolves around public art, and accessibility.

About the Mural

The mural was painted over a two-week period in July 2023 and represents the rich history of Richmond Hill. A nod to our past, present and future, the design features the radial train, iconic landmarks like the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory, and elements of the City’s natural environment. It also includes roses commemorating Richmond Hill once being dubbed the “Rose Capital of Canada”, and wheat sheaths symbolizing the City’s humble beginnings as a farming town.

"Drawing inspiration from the vibrant history of Richmond Hill, my art celebrates the cherished heritage and culture that define this community. Through a fusion of colours, symbols, and historic narratives, I seek to evoke a proud sense of belonging, weaving together a tapestry of collective identity." - Chris Perez, Artist

The RH150 Brand Story

RH150 is a moment to join together to celebrate all that makes us proud to call our vibrant community home.

It unites people, culture, nature and heritage, and in that spirit of connection, inspires and excites us for what's next on the horizon.RH150 anniversary colours
  • Yellow/Gold are a nod to our past and heritage. Yellow boosts our memory and encourages communication.
  • Purple means wisdom, bravery, and spirituality. Purple represents harmony and the balance between opposing forces.
  • Orange is uplifting, gives confidence and always injects fun. Orange is an active colour so we respond to it with heighted emotions.
  • Blue is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity.

Be sure to keep an eye out around the City this summer – you may catch one of our artists in action!
